WHAT: Allegiant Announcement

WHEN: January 31, 2014

WHERE: Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO)

Today Allegiant Airlines made an announcement to discontinue the current service between Charlottesville and Orlando-Sanford on February 23rd. The CHO team regrets that an airline has ended service to one of our markets, especially one that has been as well received as the direct flight to central Florida.  Low-cost carriers are often structured differently than our legacy carriers (American Airlines, US Airways, Delta Air Lines and United) and a lot of their difficult operational decisions have to be made as to where and when an aircraft serves. We are appreciative that Allegiant Airlines began the service and we had the opportunity to send several thousand passengers on direct flights to and from the Orlando area. But we are also disappointed that we will be unable   to do the same during our busy spring break season, as well as for our summer travelers. We would like to express our extreme gratitude to those travelers in Central Virginia that embraced this new market at CHO.

We will continue to focus on developing future air service to underserved, high demand markets such as Central and Southern Florida while strengthening our current services to Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Charlotte and Washington D.C (Dulles). The addition of a second option for our New York travelers (American Airlines to begin LGA service on April 1) demonstrates the strength and support that CHO receives from our community.

The Charlottesville Albemarle Airport is pleased to announce a new airport art program and is currently seeking local artists who are interested in having their work displayed inside the terminal for the 2014 program. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the airport and local art community by providing gallery space to local artists.  At the same time it will provide travelers with an aesthetically pleasing environment and a sense of the local culture. Individuals and groups are welcome to apply.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2014 program. Applications can be download here and are due February 7, 2014. Click here for details of the Airport Art Program Policy and application process, as well as photos of past exhibits.
