Mountain Bike Racing in the Snow….

CHO has had an adventure race "team" for a couple of years now. Not professionals...probably not even intermediates...just a group of guys that get together on weekends and struggle up mountains just to zip back down them. For every flowing stream and mountain crest in Virginia, there seems to be a mountain bike trail of some kind twisting through it. We now feel ready to take this show on the road. We just finished our first race last weekend and have the racing fever. Does anyone know of any races in Virginia during the winter months? It looks like there are many that start up in Spring, but I think it would be cool to get out there and compete with a chill in the air and snow on the ground.

Good luck finding a race in the winter race almost all shut it down for the winter. But if you are just looking for a good local ride you should try Walnut Creek or O Hill at UVA.

Find a club. Races come and go. Not much in the winter tho.
Club’s get together on weekends and just ride. They also have an inside on local comps.
check out singletracks.com for great riding.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! With the amount of crashes we have had, it makes sense to just ride for awhile!

I am new to the scene and could use a good trainig partner and advice. I entered the OFF road Series at Poor farm park in October (Expert Division 40+) and got my doors blown off. If I had entered the beginner division I could have placed. I currently ride with toe cages, should I get clipless?  Seems like that is what everyone else is riding with.

Sean, we have shared your experiences with race placement and pedals. It took some time, but we are all satisfied with clip-less over cages. You just don’t lose power or momentum and have much more control of your ride when facing challenging track. We have also started entering beginner single races and just ride together during the event.
Take a look at the 2009 Untamed Va race series as a good “final test!”.

Jason, you spoke of clip-less.  What type would you recommend as well as shoes?  I am relatively new to this but do have some experience with road clip-less and shoes. I like the look of Crank brothers but may need a little more platform.

Sean, That question can be debated for hours by our race crew! I think it comes down to cost and ease of use. If you are familiar with Crank Brothers, then it makes the transition a little easier. 2 out of our 4 riders use that brand. As far as shoes are concerned, check the local stores and shop for 2007/2008 models! this is a great way to shave the cost of an expensive shoe. Good luck!
